Wonderful Memories of Robert Palmer
I had the pleasure of meeting my father's first cousin, Robert Palmer, on three occasions: 1989, 1997 and 2007. His stories of summers spent at the Satur Mill, the home of his grandparents John Palmer and Jane Maxwell, helped me immensely in my writing project, a memoir/biography of the Palmers of the Satur called From Soul to Soul. He had the keen Palmer memory, which I have inherited, the Palmer reserve and a keen and innate intelligence, which the family all possessed. While it took him a while to 'warm' to his Canadian cousin, soon he was sharing one story after another.
He was named for his father's youngest brother Robert, who died at the age of 23 at the Somme (7th Battalion of the Black Watch) on July 30, 1916. Bobby always took that family honour seriously and was proud of his treasures, including Robert's medals and his sitation from the King and the Middlebie parish.
I had hoped to see him one more time.
